Fire Destroys 30 Years NYPD storage facility Evidence on Tuesday, reportedly injuring eight people and destroying decades’ worth of evidence, including DNA.
According to Gothamist, the fire took place inside the Erie Basin Auto Pound, where police keep seized automobiles as well as evidence from crime scenes. Three firefighters, three EMTs, and two bystanders were hurt in the three-alarm blaze.
Officials told CBS that there were no rape kits kept at the storage.
The evidence dates from 20 to 30 years ago. Property from (Hurricane) Sandy was also included in some of the evidence, according to NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey.
According to the New York Daily News, the fire damaged the command post where police officer Miosotis Familia was sitting when he was fatally attacked in 2017 and the patrol car where police officer Edward Byrne sat when he was killed in an ambush in 1988.
The cause of the fire on Tuesday is still being looked into.
