According to many media sources, the Petitio family has sued Utah police for $50 million, claiming that their negligence caused the 22-year-old New York woman’s death.
One of the witnesses claimed that Petitio’s lover, Laundrie, had assaulted her before she passed away. The family now believes that their daughter was lost as a result of the police’ delayed response to the call.
Laundrie’s journal, which was recovered at the scene of her death, contained evidence that he killed her girlfriend. He said that he killed Petitio to relieve her suffering.
The FBI closed the case and named Laundrie as Petitio’s killer before the 23-year-old Laundrie later committed suicide.
