A newborn baby girl has been rescued after she was allegedly abandoned inside a sack at Obaretin Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The baby was discovered by residents of the community at about 7 a.m. on September 18, 2026, prompting them to alert the police at Ologbo Police Station.
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, who confirmed the incident, said the baby was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.
According to her, the infant was examined by medical personnel and certified healthy.
Ikoedem said the police had commenced an investigation to identify the parents of the newborn and determine the circumstances surrounding her abandonment. He added that relevant authorities had been contacted to provide safe shelter and appropriate care for the baby.
The police spokesperson urged members of the public with useful information about the identity or whereabouts of the child’s parents to make such information available to the authorities.
She assured that the investigation would continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure the safety and welfare of the rescued infant.
