A woman has been traced 45 years after she allegedly stole a gold necklace from a jewellery shop in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India.
The woman is said to have joined the viral 1980s photos AI trend and shared the AI-generated photograph of herself on social media.
The woman’s post was reportedly recognised by the owner of the jewellery shop, who claimed she was the same woman linked to the decades-old theft.
According to reports by local newspaper, IND Today, the woman allegedly stole the gold necklace from the shop about 45 years ago but escaped without being traced despite an investigation by the police at the time.
She reportedly later changed her name and moved to another location, where she lived under a different identity for several decades.
The case remained unresolved until the jewellery shop owner came across the woman’s recent social media post.
The owner reportedly recognised her from the AI-generated photograph and contacted the police, providing information that helped authorities identify and locate her.
Police subsequently began investigating the case and questioned the woman over the alleged theft.
During questioning, she reportedly admitted to being involved in the incident.
The case has drawn attention to the unexpected role of social media in helping with criminal investigations.
