South Africa’s FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start after suffering a 2 – 0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match, and finishing the game with nine men after two players were sent off.
Mexico were also reduced to 10 men during the encounter, but the dismissal had little impact on the final result as they cruised to victory.
The result quickly became a trending topic across social media, with many Nigerians taking the opportunity to drag South Africa.
The banter comes months after South Africa finished ahead of Nigeria in the CAF World Cup qualifying campaign, securing a place at the tournament while the Super Eagles missed out.
The defeat leaves South Africa under pressure ahead of their next fixture against Czechia, with a positive result needed to boost their hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds.
