Motivation and goal difference on the final Champions League matchday could drive up scoring

The final matchday of the revamped league phase promises to be one of the most dramatic nights in the tournament’s history. Almost every team needs a win, and goal difference becomes a kind of currency teams will use to “pay” for a place in the playoffs. Against this backdrop, over (goals) markets in certain matches look especially attractive.

A nerve‑shredding finish to the league phase

On Wednesday, all 18 matches of the final matchday kick off simultaneously. UEFA introduced this format precisely to keep the suspense until the final whistle, and the idea has paid off in full. The round is decisive both for the distribution of places in the top eight, which guarantees automatic qualification for the round of 16, and for shaping the playoff round zone (top 24).

Coaches who need all three points will have to take risks: trying to protect a lead or play for a draw in such a situation simply won’t work. And when both sides commit men forward, the number of chances snowballs.

Table permutations and how tight the standings are

Places 6 through 13 are occupied by clubs on 13 points. For a real chance to make the top eight, each of them needs not just a win, but ideally a convincing win that can improve goal difference. Lower down the table, the pressure is no less: teams hovering around the top‑24 cut‑off understand that a draw may not be enough. Tottenham and, most likely, Liverpool are also in a precarious position, although for now they sit slightly above the main chasing pack.

Why we expect more goals on the final matchday

Motivation and risk. When so many participants go all in at the same time, a domino effect emerges. The need to score and improve goal difference pushes coaches toward more attacking setups, and chaotic closing stages and back‑and‑forth games become almost inevitable.
Scoring data backs up this logic with numbers. This season, the league phase is averaging 3.39 goals per game, meaning a goal is scored roughly every 27 minutes. At the same time, 58% of goals come in the second half. Last year’s tournament (excluding qualifying) averaged 3.27 goals per game, but in the final matchday of the league phase the figure jumped to 3.56, and half of the matches that day ended with four or more goals scored. Given the current share of must‑win games, the scoring bar could well be even higher.

Three games where open, attacking football looks most likely

The combination of table motivation and team statistics highlights three fixtures where the Over totals look most justified.

Selected markets and odds

  • Barcelona — Copenhagen: Over 4.5 goals — 2.46
  • Eintracht Frankfurt — Tottenham: Over 3.5 goals — 2.65
  • Ajax — Olympiacos: Over 3.5 goals — 2.60

The odds are provided based on Betway data, correct at the time of publication and subject to change.

We also reviewed data from other bookmakers. As a basis, we used several thematic iGaming rankings that appear at the top of search results. Among them was a list of online platforms from the review site bookabet co bw – we chose this resource because it includes most major betting operators. These are international platforms that operate worldwide, from Botswana to the UK. The odds analysis showed results similar to Betway’s data, sometimes with slight deviations.

Barcelona vs Copenhagen — the pressure to win big

Barcelona sit just outside the top eight and trail their rivals on goal difference, which means Hansi Flick’s team desperately need a win by a clear margin. Barcelona’s matches in this Champions League campaign are averaging 4.43 goals per 90 minutes, the second‑highest figure in the competition behind Borussia Dortmund. Copenhagen, meanwhile, concede 2.43 goals per game. Over 4.5 goals at odds of 2.46 (implied probability of about 41.7%) reflects a scenario in which the hosts at Camp Nou will keep pushing until the final whistle.

Eintracht vs Tottenham — potential for a goal storm

Tottenham under Thomas Frank need all three points, and the visitors will attack for the full 90. Hosts Eintracht are already out of contention, but their matches in the tournament are averaging 4.14 goals. Frankfurt’s defence have conceded 19 goals, one of the worst records in the league phase. Over 3.5 goals is offered at odds of 2.65 (подразумеваемая вероятность 38.1%).

Ajax vs Olympiacos — a straight fight for survival

Olympiacos currently hold the last spot in the playoff‑round zone, and a draw won’t be enough for them. Ajax trail by two points and also must win. The end‑to‑end scenario is reinforced by the Amsterdam side’s trend toward high‑scoring games: the Over 3.5 has landed in five of the team’s last six matches in all competitions. Odds of 2.60 for this line look like a logical pick.
