Justin Trudeau is facing backlash after being spotted drinking from a plastic cup during an outing at the Coachella music festival with girlfriend Katy Perry, despite banning single-use plastics in Canada when he was the Prime Minister.
The former politician was blasted as a hypocrite after his popstar lover posted footage of them sipping from red Solo cups over the weekend.
“Remember when Justin Trudeau banned plastic bags and straws for Canadians to ‘save the planet’? Now he’s posting pics using solo cups. Rules for thee, but not for me,” one person wrote on X.
“This a–hole is drinking out of a plastic cup after banning them for the entire country,” another said.
Trudeau spearheaded Canada’s ban on single-use plastics back in 2019 when he was in office.
Despite prohibiting a large swathe of so-called problematic plastics, the country-wide law doesn’t apply to all plastic cups.
Still, social media was quick to erupt after the footage of Trudeau surfaced.
“Justin Trudeau, Jun. 10, 2019: I’m banning Canadians from using single-use plastics! Justin Trudeau, Apr. 12, 2026: Look at me smash booze from a solo cup at Coachella!” one wrote on X.
Another said, “All I see is plastic cups. Someone banned them up here in Canada. Who was that again?”
Trudeau resigned as PM in early 2025, more than a year after he separated from his wife of 18 years, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau.
He then went public with the 41-year-old singer in October 2025.
