Former Nigerian defender, Kingsley Obiekwu has expressed disappointment over the reported revocation of a street named after him in recognition of Nigeria’s historic achievement at the Atlanta Olympic Games.
Following Nigeria’s gold medal triumph at the 1996 Summer Olympics, to honour members of the victorious “Dream Team” streets were named after the players in their local governments.
However, Obiekwu has revealed that the street named after him in his hometown, Ubozo, has since been revoked, a development he says he discovered years after his playing career in Europe.
“The street was commissioned in my name, but we were playing in Europe those days, so we were not able to collect the certificates.

“So three years ago, when I came to the village, I found out that it has been revoked. I began to ask questions, but I found out they said they are doing renovation or whatever.
“I told them this is the street that the federal government ordered to be given to the players in honor of our win in Atlanta ’96.

“They asked me to write a letter, which I have done, but for the past two years I have been going to that street, but it hasn’t been restored.
“I don’t know what happened, but I have been pleading to the Delta State Government to look into it because this is an honor given to all players that played in Atlanta ’96.
“Jay-Jay Okocha has his own, I had my own in Ubozo, but unfortunately it was revoked,” he told Brila.net.
Obiekwu, a member of Nigeria’s historic Olympic gold-winning squad in Atlanta, described the situation as disheartening.
