Tennis great, Roger Federer has made it clear he has no plans to coach Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz.
At just 22, Alcaraz is regarded as one of the brightest talents in world tennis alongside Jannik Sinner, having already won six Grand Slam titles. Speculation about his coaching future intensified in December 2025 after he parted ways with his long-time coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Samuel Lopez has since taken charge as Alcaraz prepares for the opening Grand Slam of the 2026 season. When asked whether he would consider joining Alcaraz’s coaching team, Federer dismissed the idea.
“No, I’m definitely out. Maybe I could give him some advice on the periphery, but everybody knows I’m too busy with my children and with my life at the minute,” Federer told TNT.
Federer, however, praised Alcaraz’s ability, insisting the young star is talented enough to succeed with or without a coach, while still acknowledging the value of proper guidance.
“I think he can get it with a coach, with no coach. He’s that good, obviously. But a good coach will definitely be helping,” he said.
He added that the transition period following Ferrero’s exit could be challenging, especially with the added pressure of media scrutiny.
“It’s going to be very important for him to find the right person in his corner. To be able to hit the career Grand Slam already at such a young age is incredible, to be honest,” Federer noted.
Looking ahead to the season, Federer tipped Alcaraz, Sinner and Novak Djokovic as key contenders.
“Let’s see if he can do it. I think Sinner is obviously the other big favourite, and I believe Novak will have a good shot as well. I’m very excited to see what’s going to happen.”
