Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has shared a personal story about the emotional and financial commitment he made while playing a father figure to his former partner’s son.
Speaking during a podcast appearance, the boxer explained that he did not take the role lightly and saw himself as a “father, not just a daddy.” According to Wilder, his involvement went beyond emotional support and extended to long-term planning.
He revealed that during the relationship, he added both his then-girlfriend and her son to his will, even though they were not married and he was not the child’s biological father. Wilder said he discussed the decision with his own children at the time, and they agreed to make room for the additional beneficiaries.
The boxer said the move reflected how seriously he viewed the relationship and the family structure he believed he was building. However, he admitted that the experience also came with emotional pain.
Recounting a particular moment, Wilder said the child once told him, “You ain’t my daddy.” He described the statement as deeply hurtful, noting that it cut especially hard given the level of sacrifice and commitment he had made.
