Nollywood actress Adunni Ade has secured a significant legal victory after a Federal High Court awarded her ₦20 million in damages over a defamation case against an online news platform.
The lawsuit, which dates back nearly two years, stemmed from a report linking the actress to an alleged romantic relationship with Senator Dino Melaye. The publication, which listed her among “six popular Nigerian celebrities” accused of dating the politician, sparked controversy at the time.
Adunni Ade, who maintained that the story was false and damaging, sued the outlet for invasion of privacy and defamation, demanding ₦100 million in compensation.
‘Truth stood tall,’ says Adunni Ade
Celebrating her court victory, Adunni Ade took to Instagram on Tuesday to express her gratitude to the Nigerian judiciary for what she described as “justice served.”
“Won my case Adunni Ade vs. Polace Media Limited (www.naijanews.com). A false story was published about me, but truth stood tall,” she wrote.
“This judgment reaffirms that privacy matters and so does integrity. Justice delayed isn’t justice denied.”
She further disclosed that the court awarded ₦20 million in damages, though the defendant reportedly fled to avoid payment. Responding to fans’ questions under her post, she wrote humorously, “Judge granted ₦20 million in damages, but blogger don japa. Na to garnish account remain.”
Actress vows to pursue more legal actions
The screen star also hinted that more lawsuits are underway, noting that she had won two out of several ongoing defamation cases. She urged other media practitioners to uphold ethical standards and verify facts before publication.
Adunni Ade’s legal victory has been widely hailed within the film industry as a positive step toward protecting the privacy and reputation of entertainers.
The case adds to the growing list of Nigerian celebrities taking legal action against online falsehoods and character assassination.
