Governor Fubara dissolves Rivers pensions board

Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved the state pensions board with immediate effect, barely two weeks after it was inaugurated.

The board, which was set up on September 12 under the leadership of Ibok-Ete Ibas, a former sole administrator, is now defunct.

In a statement released in Port Harcourt on Friday, the head of service, Inyingi Brown, announced that the office of the accountant-general will temporarily assume all responsibilities of the board until a new one is constituted.

“The executive governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the immediate dissolution of the Rivers State Pensions Board,” the statement read.

It continued: “Consequently, the office of the accountant-general of Rivers State, henceforth, will handle the functions of the board. Members of the defunct board are by this notice advised to hand over all properties and assets of the board in their possession to the director of administration of the board. His Excellency, the executive governor, will in due course constitute a new board to manage the affairs of pensions.”

No reason was provided for the sudden dissolution. However, the announcement directed all former board members to surrender every asset and document belonging to the institution.

The move represents Governor Fubara’s first major directive since his reinstatement by President Bola Tinubu on September 17, signaling what observers see as the beginning of a shake-up in state institutions as he reasserts authority over the administration.
