Media personality Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi has got people talking online after she posed a tricky scenario that many young adults can relate to.
She asked her followers to imagine saving for two years just to finally go on a dream vacation. But just when it’s time to pay for the flight ticket, your parents call, asking for urgent help with their rent.
“What would you do?” Gbemi asked. “Will you go on your vacation or will you cancel and help your parents with their rent?”
Her post immediately triggered conversations on social media, with many people weighing in on the dilemma. While some argued that family comes first and parents’ needs should always be prioritised, others felt it was unfair for parents to put such pressure on their children’s finances, especially after years of planning and sacrifice.
The debate has since opened up wider discussions on financial boundaries, cultural expectations, and how children balance their personal dreams with family responsibilities in today’s economy.
