Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has announced the retirement of the Number 5 jersey at Rangers Int’l FC in honour of the late Nigerian football legend, Christian Chukwu.
Christian Chukwu passed away in Enugu on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74.
Governor Mbah made the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle after attending a Night of Tributes for Chukwu, who captained both Rangers International and the Green Eagles, and also served as coach of the Super Eagles.
“Christian Chukwu was more than a defender, more than a captain; he was a unifying beacon at a time our nation sought symbols of pride. He was a proud son of Enugu, an icon of Igboland, and a national treasure,” Mbah stated.
“As a fitting tribute to his exploits as a central defender, we will be retiring the iconic Number 5 jersey that Chairman Chukwu proudly wore throughout his Rangers career.”
The governor also disclosed that the Enugu State Government will take responsibility for the welfare of 109 former Rangers players, while collaborating with the Federal Government to further sustain Chukwu’s legacy and immortalize his name.
He described the late Chukwu as a leader who embodied discipline, humility, and resolve both on and off the pitch, adding that his influence extended beyond football to inspire unity and resilience.
“To his family, your loss is deeply felt by all of us. And to every citizen of this state and nation, let us keep the flame of ‘Chairman’ burning brightly, not just in our memories, but in our everyday pursuit of excellence, unity, and resilience. Rest in perfect peace, Chairman,” Mbah said.
