Disney settles lawsuit with actress Gina Carano over

Actor Gina Carano has officially settled her lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, bringing an end to a high-profile legal battle over her 2021 firing from the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

The settlement, which includes the dismissal of the case with prejudice, means the matter cannot be reopened in court.

Court documents confirm that both parties reached a mutual agreement, with sources familiar with the deal indicating that Carano and her former employers decided to move forward amicably. The financial terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.

Carano filed the lawsuit in 2024, alleging wrongful termination and sex discrimination. She claimed she was fired not because of her performance but due to her political views, which she expressed on social media. According to her legal team, the dismissal followed a reposted message that compared the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust to the treatment of individuals who voiced conservative opinions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time of her firing, Lucasfilm said Carano’s social media posts were “abhorrent and unacceptable,” accusing her of denigrating people based on cultural and religious identities. Carano, who played the character Cara Dune for two seasons, insisted that male co-stars who shared political views online faced no consequences.

In her post-settlement statement on X (formerly Twitter), Carano wrote, “I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved,” adding, “I hope this brings some healing to the force.”

She also thanked Elon Musk for financing her legal battle, despite never having met him. “Thank you Mr. Musk and X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return,” she wrote.

Carano initially sought $75,000 in damages, alleging in court filings that Disney and Lucasfilm “targeted, harassed, publicly humiliated, defamed, and went to great lengths to destroy” her career. Her lawyer, Gene Schaerr, said the case was about protecting employees from being punished for expressing political or social opinions, which he argued is protected under California law.

A Lucasfilm spokesperson responded positively following the settlement, stating, “Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”

Carano, a former mixed martial arts fighter, has appeared in major Hollywood productions including Fast & Furious 6 and Deadpool. Reflecting on the settlement, she said, “I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me. Yes, I’m smiling. From my heart to yours, Gina.”
