The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to its members expressing support for President Bola Tinubu, calling their actions anti-party and threatening stiff sanctions for continued defiance.
In a statement released on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) condemned recent public endorsements of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu by prominent PDP figures. It described the endorsements as serious violations of the PDP constitution and a threat to the party’s stability and electoral future.
“In the light of the foregoing and the instancy of protecting and preserving the existence of our Party and its electoral fortune, the NWC, pursuant to the provisions of Section 59 (1) of the PDP Constitution hereby issues a strong reprimand against such anti-party activities and cautions those involved to retrace their steps or face stiffer sanctions,” the statement read.
The NWC expressed concern over what it called “persistent public media outbursts” by high-ranking members of the party, whose declarations of support for the APC’s 2027 presidential bid have sparked internal division. The party cited Section 10 (6) of its constitution, which bars members from aligning with other parties or groups to undermine the PDP.
“These anti-party activities have continued to negatively impact the PDP, leading to division, disaffection, and heavy hemorrhaging of members with the capacity to diminish our party’s electoral fortune if not immediately checked,” the statement added.
The party leadership urged all members to recommit to the values and goals of the PDP, and focus on preparations for the party’s National Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The internal crisis comes amid public endorsements of President Tinubu by influential PDP members. On July 28, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose openly backed Tinubu for a second term during an APC event in Ado Ekiti, also endorsing Governor Biodun Oyebanji and his deputy for re-election.
“I want to join all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly Ekiti leaders and followers, to endorse publicly without reservation, the President and Commander of the Armed Forces, President Bola Tinubu, for a second term,” Fayose declared at the event.
Earlier, on July 23, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke also expressed support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. While reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP, Adeleke announced his endorsement of the President after a strategic meeting with the party’s state caucus.
“I remain in the PDP, the party that gave me the platform to serve the good people of Osun,” he stated. “Our party in Osun has also endorsed President Tinubu for re-election in 2027, recognising him as a proud son of our state.”
