Police commend Anambra resident for filming abduction in Akwa

The Anambra State Police Command has commended the bravery of a resident in Awka who risked his safety to capture a video showing an apparent kidnapping in progress, aiding police efforts to investigate the incident.

The video, which has since gone viral, shows three armed men operating in a stainless-coloured Toyota Highlander SUV without a number plate. The footage captures the suspects firing shots indiscriminately before abducting an unidentified victim in the early hours of Friday, June 27.

In a statement released on Saturday, June 28, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the command is leveraging the video for investigative purposes. He stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the courage of the individual who documented the crime, noting that it is contributing significantly to the ongoing rescue efforts.

“This is aiding the rescue operations and potentially helping to save the kidnapped victim,” Orutugu said, describing the act as a powerful demonstration of community involvement in crime-fighting.

The police said the video could help identify the suspects, collect evidence, and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the command also reported the recovery of the body of Mr. Chido Ozor, a kidnap victim abducted on June 19 from his piggery farm in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area. Ikenga said police had been tracking the suspects but found Ozor’s body near his farm on June 23.

Investigations are ongoing, and the police have urged members of the public to continue supporting security efforts by sharing credible information that could lead to arrests and prevent further crimes.
