Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Sam George, slams viral gay kiss at Ghana’s Independence Arch, calls it ‘abhorrent disrespect’

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and Ghana’s outspoken anti-LGBTQ+ advocate, Samuel Nartey George, has broken his silence on the now-viral photos of a South African gay couple kissing at the Independence Arch in Accra.

According to Pulse, the couple, Rue and Lue, drew mixed reactions across social media after they shared photos of themselves in red-themed outfits kissing beneath the iconic monument — a national symbol of Ghanaian pride and liberation.

While many praised the act as bold and progressive, critics called it “disrespectful” and demanded a response from Mr George, especially given his lead role in the promotion of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

In a strongly worded statement posted on social media, Sam George described the photo as a “gross affront to Ghanaian cultural values,” calling the individuals involved “useless” and “miscreants.”

“The disrespect of our national symbols is despicable to say the least,” he wrote.

He also took shots at members of the opposition NPP, accusing them of hypocrisy and blaming the former President Akufo-Addo’s administration for failing to sign the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill during their tenure.

“You defended the immoral stance of President Akufo-Addo then and today you want to pontificate? How dare you!”

Sam George reaffirmed his commitment to the bill and called on law enforcement to locate the couple and apply the “full rigour of the law.”

He concluded by stating that the bill has been re-submitted and approved for a first reading, and urged President John Dramani Mahama to sign it once passed.

“The values, morals and innocence of our children MUST be protected. My position has NOT changed but I despise hypocrites.”
