American singer, songwriter, and pianist, Billy Joel, has announced the cancellation of all his tour dates through next year following a recent health diagnosis.
The 76-year-old music legend revealed on social media that he has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition where cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull, putting pressure on the brain. The disorder typically affects individuals over the age of 65 and can lead to issues with hearing, vision, and balance—symptoms Joel says have worsened due to recent performances.
According to a statement from his team, Joel has been instructed by doctors to refrain from performing while he undergoes specialized physical therapy. While this marks a pause in his touring career, the statement emphasised that Joel is “thankful for the excellent care he is receiving” and is “fully committed to prioritising his health.”
The singer addressed fans directly, expressing his regret and gratitude. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” he wrote.
Fans who purchased tickets for affected shows in cities including New York, New Orleans, Toronto, Santa Clara, Salt Lake City, Washington D.C., and Liverpool will receive automatic refunds.
Joel’s health challenges follow an onstage fall earlier this year during a performance in Connecticut. Despite the incident, which was captured on video by a fan, he completed the show. In March, he postponed multiple concerts to recover from surgery and undergo therapy.
In July 2024, Joel concluded his historic 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden, performing his 150th show at the venue.
His wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, has also faced health issues, recently opening up about her battle with endometriosis. She praised Joel for his support during her painful journey, saying he actively researched her condition and shared medical information to help.
The couple, married since 2015, share two daughters, Della and Remy.
Joel has previously been married to Elizabeth Weber, Katie Lee, and supermodel Christie Brinkley. He shares one daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, with Brinkley, who recently reflected on their marriage in her memoir, citing Joel’s drinking as a factor in their divorce.
While Joel’s immediate future remains focused on recovery, he expressed hope about returning to the stage when his health allows.
