The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has announced the arrest of a prominent expatriate contractor accused of vandalizing streetlights in the capital city.
Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing streetlight repair and maintenance projects, AMMC Coordinator Felix Obuah revealed details of the arrest.
While withholding the identity of the foreign national, Obuah confirmed that the contractor’s company is well-known and that the individual will face “full wrath of the law.”
According to Obuah, the alleged vandalism was carried out by the contractor to secure the streetlight contract. This revelation has shocked officials, as they initially believed the perpetrators were mere scavengers or miscreants.
The incident occurred amid efforts by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to ensure Abuja remains illuminated. Obuah stated that the city’s streetlights are divided into 21 lots, with 18 already inspected and found to be vandalized or under repair.
“We are not impressed with the level of vandalism that has occurred in some of those lots,” Obuah declared. “However, I am impressed with my team for meeting expectations, particularly with ongoing maintenance work on Yar’adua Way and Jabi areas, where lighting has been restored in some cases, though others remain pending.”
Obuah emphasized that the AMMC will take swift action to restore the damaged infrastructure. He noted that the arrest of the expatriate contractor marks a significant development in the investigation, dispelling earlier assumptions about the nature of the culprits.
“We have arrested a very prominent contractor, an expatriate who is involved in vandalizing these streetlights to enable them get this contract,” Obuah stated firmly. “One of the expatriates has been arrested and is currently in detention, with full evidence to support our claims.”
The AMMC coordinator assured that a comprehensive report detailing the findings and actions taken will be submitted to the FCT Minister. He stressed that both the perpetrators and those purchasing stolen materials will face consequences for their actions.
“Buying and installing while miscreants and expatriates are vandalizing it, sabotaging the good efforts of government is wrong,” Obuah concluded emphatically. “We cannot allow such activities to continue unchecked.”
