Three players from the University of Louisville men’s soccer team have been dismissed after they helped organize an off-campus party that led to 29 attendees becoming infected with COVID-19

The team’s head coach, John Michael Hayden, announced the news on Thursday, adding that three additional players have been suspended for their role in organizing the large gathering.

‘I’m extremely disappointed in these young men,’ Hayden said in a statement, without identifying any of the individual players.

‘They have demonstrated with their actions now and previously that they do not echo the culture of this program. Our student-athletes are held to a high standard of conduct as representatives of our program and university.’

The off-campus party was held last Saturday night, and was attended by University of Louisville athletes who compete in a variety of different sports.

The team’s head coach, John Michael Hayden, announced the news on Thursday, saying he was ‘extremely disappointed’

The event violated rules put into place by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear which limits gatherings to 10 people.

‘That limit was ignored,’ Louisville athletic director Vince Tyra stated.

‘By the contact tracing you can see by the number of positive results there was more than 10 so they didn’t follow those state guidelines at all.’

The cluster of COVID-19 cases stemming from the  off-campus party has now roiled the college’s athletics program.

Athletes from the men’s and women’s soccer teams have now tested positive to the coronavirus, as have players from the University of Louisville’s volleyball and field hockey teams.

Workouts and pre-season practices have been cancelled, according to The Courier Journal.

Around 20,000 University of Louisville are set to return to campus from next Tuesday ahead of the commencement of the 2020-2021 academic year.

Officials say they have plans in place that they hope will stop the spread of COVID-19.

The college will put an emphasis on social distancing, sanitizing and the use of face masks, according to WLKY.

Students will be move into their campus accommodation in a staggered manner over the course of an entire week so as to avoid overcrowding.
