While it’s no secret that the right bedding can help you get a better night’s sleep, did you know that swapping your cotton pillowcase for a silk version results in major beauty benefits for your skin and hair?

Not only do they feel incredible to sleep on, but silk pillowcases are also super soft and luxurious, and they don’t have to cost the earth either. One affordable option that Amazon shoppers are raving about is this silk pillowcase with a cotton underside from Jasmine Silk, which costs just £10.99.

The silky, smooth pillowcase made from 100 per cent mulberry silk (silk’s equivalent of Egyptian cotton) is currently one of the mega retailer’s bestselling pillowcases, having racked up over 2,000 reviews.

Alternatively, Slip also offers luxe and top-rated pillowcases that protect the hair and skin while encouraging a good night’s kip. You can even add a pure silk sleep mask to the mix to completely transform your bedtime routine.

So do silk pillowcases actually work? The bottom line is yes. Although your cotton pillowcase may feel soft, Shanelle Blake, skin specialist at Pulse Light Clinic, says tossing and turning throughout the night creates friction that can be damaging to the hair follicle, resulting in frizzy locks.

‘Cotton and linen pillowcases are known as the norm, but they essentially create a lot of friction between the hair and can end up pulling your hair when you are sleeping,’ she says.

‘Silk fabric used for pillowcases allows your hair to slide naturally and does not absorb the hair’s moisture which ultimately helps hair remain frizz-free during the night.’

If that isn’t reason enough switch from cotton to silk, your pillowcase could be one of the reasons why your complexion is irritated, breaking out or sensitive.

Shanelle adds: ‘Silk fabrics have been known to be less irritating to the skin for patients with eczema. Anyone that has sensitive skin will find silk pillowcases much more helpful because they are lightweight and non-irritating compared to cotton and polyester, which have a thicker texture.’

‘Synthetic fabrics are known for trapping heat compared to silk which is lighter and breathable, allowing the skin to be kept cool and preventing any redness and inflammation,’ she continues.

‘Silk fabrics are antibacterial and hypoallergenic, which means there are less harmful bacteria, which is great if you have sensitive skin or acne-prone.’

Amazon shoppers believe that the Jasmine Silk pillowcase helps prevent face creases, is ultra-comfortable and keeps bed head under control.

‘My hair is so shiny and smooth in the morning I don’t even need to blow dry’, wrote one user in their review. ‘And the wrinkle on my forehead that shows up in the mornings has become more smooth and is barely noticeable now after a month of use.’

Another added: ‘Love this! It’s super soft and stays cool during the night. My skin has improved after just a short time of using this, and my hair is less frizzy in the morning – would definitely recommend for anyone with wavy/curly hair!’

A third shopper wrote: ‘Great product I use silk pillowcases as I suffer from rosacea and find this helps as silk doesn’t draw oils from the skin, very comfortable really nice quality.’

When purchasing a silk pillowcase, it’s worth noting that the average momme count (the weight of silk thread) is 19. However, for something more luxurious, pick a pillowcase that’s 22 momme or higher.
